Thursday Things

1. I have little use for Jewel Osco really on the whole as a grocery store, but lately it’s been working quite hard to get itself into my good graces. A couple weeks ago I discovered they now sell Hudsonville Ice Cream, which in and of itself elevated Jewel to at-least-better-than-Walmart status. This past week, though, the store made a surprise surge in the fight to be my favorite non-Trader Joe’s place to shop.

SALT WATER TAFFY OMG. I found it available in bulk at Jewel and I almost (but not quite) regretted the many, many times I’ve hated on Jewel based on this alone. I โค salt water taffy, but I can’t remember the last time I actually had some. I grabbed a few scoops of the flavors that sounded most delicious (s’mores, Neapolitan, orange vanilla, peppermint, cinnamon and black licorice) expecting it to cost an arm and a leg when I checked out. Nope! Only 89 cents! When I got home, I counted my pieces of salt water taffy to figure out how long it’d last, and saw that I conveniently bought 21 pieces — enough to last me three weeks!

It lasted me three days. Oops ๐Ÿ™‚

2. If I may vent for a brief moment: what is it with Big 10 alum and their defensiveness over who is and who isn’t allowed to be a fan of their alma mater (or any other school in the Big 10, for that matter)? My goodness. I think if I had a dollar for every time someone side-eyed me for running “for” Michigan at the BTN Big 10K (either this year, last year, or the year before), I’d have enough to pay the race registration fee next year.ย I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve had to explain that no, I didn’t go to Michigan, but I grew up in a family of Michigan fans and spent many fall Saturday afternoons watching Michigan games and therefore, you know, consider myself to be a Michigan fan, despite the fact that my college diploma does not say “University of Michigan.” Iย don’t understand why the fact thatย I didn’t go to Michigan means I’m not allowed to be a Michigan fan or I’m some second-rate bandwagon rider. I got into Michigan, all right? I could’ve gone to Michigan.

See? (Yes, I still have my acceptance letter six and a half years later. I’m proud of it, thank you very much.)

I just chose not to go to Michigan. Crazy, I know. But good heavens. I went to some itty bitty DIII school no one’s heard of, so we weren’t exactly competitive with U of M, to say the least. It’s not like I went to Ohio State and have now decided to be a Michigan fan just for kicks. I understand why Michiganders (especially those from the east side of the state) get all hot and bothered over the fact that I now cheer for the Blackhawks rather than the Red Wings (using “cheer” in the most general, I-have-a-vauge-awareness-of-when-the-Blackhawks-win-or-lose-and-know-how-to-prononces-Toews sort of sense), but I don’t think I’ll ever understand why big school alum have to be so darnย possessive.

3. Lollapalooza is almost here! Woohoo! Between a Saturday after show and spending all day on Sunday at Lolla, I’m going to be one tired girl come Monday morning. Worth it, though.ย Love me some live music, and I am stoked to absolutely dance my face off this weekend ๐Ÿ˜€

Are you going to Lollapalooza? And if you are, who are you most excited to see?ย Flume!!! SO. STOKED. And The 1975. And maybe Flosstradamus? And Chance the Rapper. BAH.
Are you a fan of any team you don’t have a direct connection to?ย
Favorite candy?ย I mean, chocolate, all day err’day, but as far as non-chocolate candies go, salt water taffy is right up there for me.

  1. Have fun this weekend hun!! One year I really want to come check this out. It sounds like such a fun time ๐Ÿ™‚ mm and my favorite candy (non chocolate) is Swedish fish ๐Ÿ™‚ i give myself a stomach ache anytime I get a bag from eating too much haha

  2. Haha I’m so lame that I’ve never heard of any of the people you mentioned. I suck when it comes to music, but I think that means I’ll be saving a LOT of money when I’m not buying Lolla tickets next year! Have so much fun though! I hope you’ll be wearing cut off shorts, a flowy crop top, putting your hair up in a top knot, and enjoying the concert culture.

  3. Girl you are preaching to the choir. I went to Illinois but deep down I’m all about the Maize and Blue because my dad grew up there and we had so many family traditions growing up that centered around Michigan football games. I wanted to go their so badly but I got deferred and then choice U of I instead. Definitely no regrets but I rock my five Michigan shirts and sweatshirts all the time because no one should care haha.

  4. That’s interesting about Big 10s! I grew up a Penn State kid–my parents worked there and people were so protective of their pride of Penn State. I got accepted into Michigan too for my master’s but ended up staying closer to home what program did you apply to?

    • Ugh, yes! That’s the phrase, and I hate it. Let’s be real: NCAA sports, at least at that level, are essentially pro sports (just without the athletes getting paid, of course). Getting all bent out of shape over people cheering for a college team like U of M when they did not attend said college is like getting all bent out of shape over people being Bears fans if they live in Rockford. Just because you don’t live in Chicago doesn’t mean you can’t be a Bears fan, and just because someone didn’t go to Michigan doesn’t mean they can’t be a Michigan fan, or that they’re an inferior fan. Ugh. I clearly have Opinions on all of this ๐Ÿ˜›

  5. I went to NIU (Northern Illinois University) so no competition there right? ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah, I could never understand that “rivalry” among schools. Oh well. I almost ran that race and had decided to wear an NIU shirt. I think I would have gotten more grief about it.

I’ve never had salt water taffy.
