Last week, I briefly mentioned some of the cool aspects of the Humana Healthier Choices program at the Taste of Chicago. Since Taste begins tomorrow, now is the perfect time to fill you in on all the details of the program!
The Taste of Chicago has an incredibly array of food: tacos, pizza, burgers, ice cream — it’s all there. Obviously with this kind of line up, Taste of Chicago may not seem like the best place to grab lunch or dinner if you like to make healthy decisions for meals. Ah, how wrong you are!
For the past seven years, the Humana Healthier Choices program has made it easy to enjoy Taste and eat healthfully. In order to count as a Humana Healthier Choice, appetizers, entrees and desserts must meet calorie, sodium and saturated fat criteria reviewed by a panel of Chicago-area diet and nutrition experts. This year, a whopping 52 options meet those standards. Just take a look at some of the foods on the Humana Healthier Choices Passport Guide this year:
– Taste portion beet/apple gazpacho from Brasserie by LM
– Cocktail shrimp from Lawrence Fisheries
– Grilled chicken taco from Carbon Live Fire Mexican grill
– Crunchy California roll from Kamehachi
– Lemon Italian Ice from Franco’s Ristorante
– Mango sorbet from Star of Siam
AND, most importantly:
– Turkey leg from Manny’s Cafeteria and Deli
– Taste of dream cup from Original Rainbow Cone
That’s right: two of the most classic Taste foods make the Humana Healthier Choices list! Pretty stellar, huh?
You can pick up your Humana Healthier Choices Passport Guide at the Humana tent on Columbus Drive between Jackson and the Buckingham Fountain. Collect stamps by participating in wellness activities or sampling Humana Healthier Choices foods for a chance to win prizes, such as restaurant gift cards.
Aside from eating healthy, there are a couple other ways Humana Healthier Choices will help you make the most of Taste. This year, Taste attendees can download the free Charity Miles app from iTunes or the Google Play Store and use all the walking you’ll do at Taste (or around the Chicago metropolitan area in general) to support charity. For every mile you walk, run or bike, Humana will donate 25 cents to a charity you choose. This is open to anyone who logs into the app in the Chicago metropolitan area from July 9 to July 13 and is a great way to add some meaning to your movement.
Finally, noon to 1 p.m. every day of Taste features the Humana Power Hour. During this time, radio personalities from 93XRT will be on site at Taste to challenge people to get moving by participating in Wii games. Doing so will earn you another stamp in your Humana Healthier Choices Passport Guide, that same magical document I mentioned earlier that can put you in the running for awesome prizes.
So there you have it! Several great ways to make the most of your time at the Taste of Chicago this year. I know I’m going to try to take advantage of as much of this as I can when I visit Taste later this week, and I hope you do as well. Speaking of attending Taste, let’s get to that giveaway winner, shall we?
