Thursday Things

0. Though I’m sure many of you have seen this, I urge you all, PARTICULARLY those of you with Instagram, to take two minutes out of your precious day to watch and learn from this important PSA:

As a vocal opponent of the horrific abomination to language that is the #hashtag, I WHOLEHEARTEDLY approve of this message.

(And yes, I do realize that I, too, occasionally use hashtags, and perhaps this makes me appear hypocritical. However, I would argue that my highly calculated and limited use of hashtags exempts me from the sector of the population Fallon and Timberlake address in this skit.)

And now that we’ve got that out of the way…

1. Ugh, sorry, but I’m going to be that marathoner. I AM FREAKING OUT ABOUT MY HIP YOU GUYS. Well, maybe that was a bit dramatic. On a scale of “utter disinterest” to “full blown panic attack,” I’m probably smidge north of “relatively concerned.” Using my advanced, highly educated Internet diagnostic skills, I’ve come to the conclusion that my overworked hip flexor turned into a strained hip flexor on the 20 miler Sunday (because the Internet told me that if you lie down, pull your knee to your chest, and feel pain, you have a strain. Last week when my hip started giving me trouble, I could do that without feeling anything, but when I got stretched out by NovaCare after the 20 Miler, I did feel “pain” [more like I felt “something.” As in, “Oh, yes, there is a muscle in my body in that particular location, and I am aware of it at this moment.” I feel like “pain” overstates things], and I have continued to feel achy there ever since). So now I’m all, “Should I run? Should I bike? SHOULD I PANIC?!?!” I mean, on the one hand (the logical hand), I know I’m physically prepared to run a marathon, and I’m not entirely concerned about my ability to complete the race, which is my primary goal. On the other hand (the anxiety hand), the thought of not running at all for the next two and a half weeks terrifies me, but the thought of running and possibly aggravating my already-grouchy hip flexor terrifies me just as much.

2. While I love living in Chicago, I think fall might be one of my least favorite seasons to be in the city. There are, tragically, no apple orchards or pumpkin patches anywhere to be found (at least if you’re carless like I am), and as someone who grew up with these things, I definitely miss them in September/October.

Fortunately, one of my favorite ‘hoods, Lincoln Square, came through for me last Saturday with Apple Fest. While buying apples from Michigan is definitely NOT the same as picking apples in Michigan, I’m happy to take what I can get in the non-grocery store apple department. Now I just need to find myself some cider donuts and apple cider (and/or a car to get me to Crane Orchards in Fennville, Michigan…I could really go for a Fuji right off their tree and one of their turkey burgers right about now) and I’ll be a happy camper.

3. It’s book club week! I honestly don’t even remember the last time I went to book club — it might have been June? It’s been a long time, I know that. I also know that I’m very excited to eat all sorts of food and probably not talk about the fan-freaking-tastic book we read this month, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened.

I am a HUGE fan of The Blogess–hers was one of the first blogs I ever read, well before I discovered HLBs–and Lawson’s memoir, like her blog, is absolutely hilarious. I normally read on my commute, but I never brought this book with me to work or on public transportation because I knew I’d make a fool of myself laughing, and I was right. I was laughing like a goon through pretty much all of this book, and I’d highly recommend it for anyone looking for some humor, even if you’re not familiar with The Blogess.

  1. I’m a big user of hashtags but I watched that video on the train home yesterday and just about died laughing. If you think about it, hashtags really are stupid. Why can’t we just say what we’re thinking without using a hashtag? It’s better grammar and gets the same point across. Keep an eye on that hip and hopefully it heals up in no time! If it makes you feel any better, my swim coach literally gave me CDs freshman year that said “I’m a headacse” across the top of them because I was overanalyzing every little thing. So you aren’t the only one who get s a little worked up over things.

  2. Sorry to hear about your hip! Did you end up getting a massage? Did it help? Have you thought of getting one of the NovaCare injury screens to see what they think you should do between now and the marathon? Whatever you choose to do, you’re prepared to run a marathon and I believe most recommendations for injuries 2-3 weeks out from a marathon suggest not running (if it’ll make things worse) and using the taper to heal. I’m obviously not a professional though, just what I read when I had my stress fracture before Boston. Heal up fast!

    • I did get a massage, and no, it did not help. Boo. I also got an injury screen at NovaCare last Thursday, where I was told I probably have an overworked hip flexor, MAYBE a strain…but that was last Thursday. I think the 20 miler pushed me over the edge. I’m going to the doctor tomorrow, and I contacted CARA for what I should do from here on out. I’ve been told by CARA to not do any activity at all, not even stretching, from now until next Monday, when I can give three miles a go and see what happens. So that means skipping a long run on Saturday. Hmph. And then after that everything is REALLY light…pretty much between 2 and 4 miles, with one 8 miler for the last long run. I’ma lose my mind. Hahaha. BUT as long as it makes my hip happy, I’m happy.

  3. love that book. love that video clip (already saw it – duh? a jimmy fallon girl couldn’t pass that up you know that!) I have been quoting it at work all day. my coworkers love me for that reason. ha! also deep breathes, take some time off this week from running, get in some non pain cross training and see how that hip feels i bet it will feel a lot better with some rest

    • I obviously immediately thought of you since it’s Jimmy Fallon and all. Thanks, thanks…trying to keep my head on straight. I’m staring down four 100% full rest days (GAH), and then can get back into running next Monday. MONDAY. SO FAR. SKIPPING A LONG RUN. GAH x2. Hopefully it’ll make my hip happy, though…and give me time to catch up on So You Think You Can Dance, since I still haven’t watched the finale (even though I know what happens) haha.
