Thursday Things

1. Guess what I got yesterday??

lolla

!!

I feel like the Lolla lineup has gotten so much hate this year (from all the indie snobs that work at the RedEye and Chicago Reader), but man, I don’t care what anyone says: I’m STOKED to be going on Saturday. I didn’t want to drop all the $$$ for a three-day pass, and fortunately nearly every artist I wanted to see was playing on Saturday, so I opted for a one-day pass. I’m really excited for The Lumineers and Ellie Goulding, and I’m crazy excited for Mumford & Sons, but I about died of happiness when I saw Eric Church was playing on Saturday. Man, I’ll skip every other artist that day to see Eric Church. He, along with Luke Bryan, is my favorite solo male country artist and as far as I’m concerned is one of the best country musicians out there right now. He’s not a commercial sellout (ahem, Rascal Flatts, Lady Antebellum, Taylor Swift), he doesn’t speak all of his lyrics in some weird, not at all fun to listen to sort of country rap type thing (Jason Aldean…), I’ve never known any of his songs to be thinly-vieled racism (TOBY KEITH. Ugh, Toby Keith), and just in general Eric Church is everything good about country music in my mind. Can. Not. Wait.

Now, if only I can win tickets to see Kacey Musgraves at Joe’s Bar later this month, too…

2. Remember how last week I said that finding packages in my entryway was even better than getting love notes in the mail? Well! On Tuesday not only did I get a love note in the mail from my grandpa, who every now and again sends me random newspaper clippings which I think is just the cutest thing ever, BUT I also got a package in my entryway, and it was even better than new toys!

FOOD! Caitlin is now officially THE BEST. My affections are easily bought with baked goods, so if you’d like to be THE BEST, feel free to send me sugar and butter laden treats. I’ll love you forever.

3. Even though I’m quite convinced there is no Jewel Osco in Chicagoland jankier than the one I frequent, I’ve got to say that I’m rather impressed with the daffodils I bought there last Friday.

daffodils

Look at how pretty they are! When I bought them they only had about four flowers out and I didn’t really notice any buds, but they just exploded overnight and that makes me so happy.

Have you ever been to a music festival? This is my first! Although I did go to Taste of Lincoln Ave. last year for the music…not really the same thing. BUT I saw Anberlin AND Augustana for a grand total of $7, which was awesome.
What’s your favorite spring flower? Tulips, fo’ sho’. I hail (kinda) from a land where tulips are taken very seriously, so I love me some tulips.

Also, it’s my brother’s birthday today! Hooray brother! I’ll never forget the time 17 years ago today when I threw a temper tantrum in Grandma and Grandpa’s living room upon discovering that you were a boy, not a girl like I had hoped you’d be.

  1. Caitlin really is be best. I bet those cookies were pretty tasty! We all know my feelings about getting packages but getting food of any kind from someone pretty awesome, now that’s even better. That concert sounds so cool! I’ve never been to anything like that but I know you’ll have an absolute blast.

  2. nooooooooooooooooooooooooo I was also so excited about the Saturday line-up and realized I forgot to buy tickets yesterday. I just checked and they’re SOLD OUT. ugh. there goes our anniversary trip to Chicago this year.

  3. Happy bday to your little bro!! I’m glad you enjoyed the cookies 🙂 always makes me happy to see! Ugh i am NOT a fan of toby keith either, which is a problem in my fam since my mum loves him and goes to his concert every year. Ewww. Can i go to lolla with you?? That line up looks awesomeeeee

    • Aww thanks! SO glad we have the same feelings on Toby Keith. Just…ugh. I mean, I get that a lot of what he sings about really appeals to, um, country’s “core market,” if you will, but so much of it is downright offensive, you know? Guh. Cannot get on board with that.

  4. I went to Lollapalooza years ago … 2008, I think. Just for one day. Just to see Radiohead. It was a lot of fun! Make sure you wear sunscreen and reapply!!! I also saw the Black Keys (didn’t really know who they were at the time, but I liked them). I also went to the AreaOne festival in 2001, I think that festival only last two years. Oh, and Lilith Fair. When they brought it back a couple years ago. A friend got free tickets.

    • Ah yes, sunscreen will be SO key (assuming there’s not some insane thunderstorm like there has been for the past two years…haha). I also believe I’m going to be doing like a 10 mile run that morning…so I imagine water and a decent pair of shoes will also be so key haha.

  5. I’ve never been to a music festival but I’ve always wondered if I could just hang out on the lakefront path and listen to the Lollapalooza artists I’m interested in… Probably doesn’t work that way!

    Those daffodils are AMAZING!

    • I’ve wondered about that, too! I mean, it’s not like they can magically stop the sound from getting outside of Grant Park if you just happened to be strolling up and down Michigan Ave. that day…but I’m sure you wouldn’t be able to hear things nearly as well, either.

  6. OOh have fun at lolla! I went for all three days three years ago and it was a lot of fun (but exhausting!). Ian and I were talking about going on Saturday this year but I’m not sure that its going to happen. Saturday is for sure the best day though!

    • Thanks! I’m really excited, and I totally agree that Saturday’s lineup looks like the best of the three. I don’t think I’d have the endurance to handle three days of Lolla, though, so it’s probably for the best that I only got a one-day ticket!

  7. So bummed that Saturday is sold out, solid lineup! Have fun! I second all the ladies, sunscreen, it’s always hella hot so wear your hair up, if you are a wine drinker they offer a drink called the ‘stepmom’- it’s dang near a full bottle of wine in a huge cup for the cost of three beers. Hilarious, right? I love a deal, but the idea of chugging wine when it’s that hot out? Gross.

  8. I have so many things to say about this post! I had no idea you were a country music fan and I’m excited because none of my other people I know here are country music fans. Next time I need a friend for a country music concert I will know who to ask! I LOVE Eric Church, but I am also guilty of liking others on your diss list-Jason Aldean’s Dirt Road Anthem? I mean, come on, it’s awesome. I also like Lady A. I think it’s weird when non-country artists convert to country artists-Kelly Clarkson and Hootie, specifically.
After looking at the Lolla line-up I think I am going to be looking for a Saturday pass soon!
My favorite spring flower is lilacs. They may not be the prettiest but the smell reminds me of playing in the backyard growing up.

    • AHHHH YES! Yes yes yes yes a thousand times yes! I have exactly zero country music fan friends in Chicago, so if you ever want to go to a show, hit me up. Chances are I’ll be ALL over it. I really like Jason Aldean’s old music–Amarillo Sky? She’s Country? Yes please. But Dirt Road Anthem is where it all started to head south for me in terms of Jason Aldean. Why oh why can’t he just SING his songs instead of speak them? Bahhhh. And I think I’d like Lady A a lot more if they weren’t everywhere. Pretty much once I start hearing country music on pop radio, that’s the end of it for me…I don’t like pop-ified country. I hate how much I like Downtown, though. HATE how much I like it. That song is seriously my jam right now, and it just kills my soul since it’s a Lady A song hahaha.

  9. HOLD THE FREAKING DOOR, why can’t I go to that concert? oh my god I am so freaking jealous, I want to hear all the details after. side note, I have missed you and can’t wait to be back in full swing with reading!

    • Details will be longwinded and extensive, per my usual writing. Don’t you even worry 😉

Also, I believe you tweeted something about marking “Read All” on your Google Reader, and a small part of me died inside because I was like 😦 but I missssss youuu! Read my posts! I’m needy! So then when I saw you commented it put a big ol’ smile on my face 🙂
