Pyramid Swim

(First: Sorry for being absentee. Finals week, you know. I’m free now, though!)

Despite my calendar saying it’s December 14, today it looks and feels very much like March 14. Cold-ish, gray-ish, rainy-ish, gross-ish. Pandora played “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas” for me today to which I said, “Falso, Pandora. It’s beginning to look like a lot like St. Patrick’s Day, if anything.” Word on the street is we won’t have a white Christmas this year, which is a major bummer. I recall one experiencing non-green Christmas before this, and it’s just lame. When you live in a climate with four seasons, it shouldn’t be too much to ask for snow on Christmas as far as I’m concerned. Unfortunately, I still have not mastered my weather controlling skills, so I’m resigned to accept whatever happens.

Because of the nastiness and my impending trip home (i.e.: my impending three weeks without access to a gym 😦 ), I swam today. I’m a little…concerned, for a lack of a better word, about how I’m going to keep my cardio and strength fitness up when I’m home for break. I can run, of course, but I’m losing access to my variety and I’m not thrilled about that.

But anyway. Swimming! I haven’t swum since the day before Thanksgiving, so it’s been awhile. I felt ambitious today and set a PSR (Personal Swimming Record…I might have made that up haha): 14 laps! That’s 700 yards (or meters…I honestly don’t know) and 200 more than I’ve ever swam before. Obviously I took breaks, but I’m still pretty proud of myself for swimming that much. My swim was structured like such:

– one lap breaststroke, one lap freestyle
(90 second break)
– one lap breaststroke, one lap freestyle, one lap breaststroke
(90 second break)
– one lap freestyle, one lap breaststroke, one lap freestyle, one lap breaststroke
(2 minute break)
– one lap freestyle, one lap breaststroke, one lap freestyle
(60 second break)
– one lap freestyle, one lap breaststroke

Hence the “pyramid” in “pyramid swim.” It was actually a lot more doable than I expected.

And now on to break! So far I expect my break to look a lot like the following:

Looks pretty good to me 🙂

Do you have any advice on how I can keep up my fitness during break? I’m looking for exercise suggestions more than food suggestions 🙂
